Our name
The name Loftleiðir translates from Icelandic to English as 'air routes' or 'air ways'.
The ‘ð’ is a unique Icelandic letter, pronounced with a soft ‘th’ sound (like in ‘the’), so the approximate pronunciation of our name is Loft-ley-thir.
You might see the company name spelt as Loftleidir, as other languages often use a 'd' where Icelandic uses 'ð'.
The story of Loftleiðir
The story of Loftleiðir Icelandic began in 1944 when three young Icelandic pilots returned from their flight training in Canada and founded the company.
To begin with, Loftleiðir served as a domestic flight operator. On June 17 in 1947 – Icelandic National Day – the company started its first international route between Reykjavík and Copenhagen.
