Our name
The name Loftleiðir translates from Icelandic to English as 'air routes' or 'air ways'.
The ‘ð’ is a unique Icelandic letter, pronounced with a soft ‘th’ sound (like in ‘the’), so the approximate pronunciation of our name is Loft-ley-thir.
You might see the company name spelt as Loftleidir, as other languages often use a 'd' where Icelandic uses 'ð'.
The story of Loftleiðir Icelandic
In 2024 we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Loftleiðir. From humble beginnings operating domestic flights to becoming pioneers of international travel, the spirit of Loftleiðir has always been about pushing boundaries.️
The story of Loftleiðir Icelandic began in 1944 when three young Icelandic pilots returned from their flight training in Canada and founded the company.
