70 years of history
Today 70 years have passed since the foundation of Loftleidir Icelandic. The exact date of the foundation of Loftleidir Icelandic is March 10th 1944 when three young Icelandic pilots returned from flight training in Canada and founded the airline. To begin with Loftleidir served only the domestic market but already on the Icelandic national holiday June 17th 1947 the company started its first international route between Reykjavik and Copenhagen. The aircraft used on the route was a Douglas DC-4 Skymaster, the first international airplane in Iceland. During the glorious history of Loftleidir the airline offered up to three departures a day from New York to Luxemburg via Keflavík and had an office at the Rockefeller Center Fifth Avenue.
Still today we at Loftleidir Icelandic, the leasing company of Icelandair Group, acknowledge and are inspired by the history of Loftleidir.
